Join Kevin Feary in working with oil paints to explore one of art history’s finest traditions: Portraiture. Using photos of your loved ones, Kevin will guide students in learning the different components that make an oil portrait come to life: Composition– placement of your loved one on the canvas; Drawing– how to use shapes to create different features of the face and body; Values– creating light and darkness accurately; and Color– how to mix colors for flesh-tones and how to identify and adjust your color mixtures. 

The class will begin with a 2-hour demonstration by Kevin, followed by a short lunch break (students bring their own lunch), then a few hours of painting with plenty of individual guidance for each student. This is an OIL painting class, but if you’d like to take this portrait class and use a drawing utensil like charcoal or graphite, then this workshop will be good for you too, as everything Kevin plans to discuss hinges on sound drawing! All materials are included in the cost of the class.
